Chapter 12 - Tara

“Max?” Tara groaned, barely able to lift her head when she distantly heard voices. Having been hallucinating due to the lack of food and dehydration, she had no idea whether she was actually hearing anything at all. The heart palpations she had been experiencing for the last day or so were growing worse and her hands and feet were so numb that she could no longer even move her fingers or her toes.

Yet she was holding on to hope, praying that the next time the basement door opened it would be Max coming to rescue her. She strained her ears trying to listen beyond the door and to the floor above and when she did, she heard the words. “We’ve caught one of them.”

Her heart instantly skipped a beat before continuing with its annoying, off-rhythm beating. Trying to wriggle just a few inches to move closer to the door, to be able to hear just a little better, she strained her ears as much as she could.

A second voice sounded, “He wants to speak with you.” Tara’s skin began to crawl at the words even as the second voice added, “He says he has the information you might like to hear.”

There was silence for several moments, and Tara wondered whether maybe her ears had given up on her. Yet she could still hear the sound of dripping water coming from somewhere inside the dark basement. The sound had been making her thirstier and thirstier over the last few days, but she was thankful for it now, telling her that she still had her sense of hearing even if she could barely see in the darkness.

“In that case, bring him in,” Mario’s voice sounded proud and confident, as though he thought that nothing could possibly go wrong. She could imagine him now, reclining comfortably on whatever chair she’d heard being dragged across the floor above her head, and she fought the urge to rip his throat out as she had felt so many times before.

No member of the Silverdale pack would be willing to talk to another alpha, she thought, unable to believe that the men above her head had managed to get their hands on any one of her pack members. Yet, she quickly reminded herself that they had managed to get their claws into her. I’m just as loyal as the rest of my pack!

The sounds of a struggle told Tara that whoever they had caught on their territory was being dragged into the room above her head. Then she heard his voice. “Get your hands off me!” Tara’s stomach tied in knots the moment she realized that it was Max. “I came here in peace!”

“If that’s true, then you won’t mind answering a few questions,” came Mario’s response, and the sounds of struggling stopped as though the alpha had instructed his men to release him.

Max, what are you doing? Tara thought desperately, fighting the urge to believe that Max had come to do exactly what she had been trying not to do for almost a week.
